Power-Loomed Rugs

A power-loomed rug is woven on a mechanized loom that inserts the knots, then finished by hand. At Halıcızade these rugs are made in Kütahya and Uşak in wool, cotton and Tencel lyocell — the look and fiber quality of a workshop rug, at a fraction of a hand-knotted price.

In Turkish we call this kara tezgah. It is a hybrid method, and we would rather say so plainly than let the word "handwoven" do work it has not earned. The loom does the knotting. People do the setting up, the finishing, the trimming and, where a rug has them, the fringes.

Designs Drawn for Türkiye

These patterns are drawn and woven for the Turkish market. We do not sell them through American retailers and we do not license the designs to anyone who does — neither the authentic Anatolian pattern families nor the modern ranges. Buying here is the way to get them, and the rug that arrives is unlikely to be sitting in a neighbor's living room.

How These Rugs Are Made

The warp is dressed on the loom by hand. The loom then inserts the pile knots at a speed no hand can match — this is what makes the price possible. When the rug comes off the loom, the finishing is manual: edges bound, pile sheared level, backs cleaned, and on many of these rugs the fringes tied one at a time by women in Uşak.

The result sits between two familiar things. It is not a hand-knotted rug, and we do not sell it as one. It is also not the fused-backing synthetic rug most people picture when they hear "machine-made" — the fibers are the same ones we use on our hand-knotted looms.

Fibers We Use, Named Accurately

Wool — the usual pile fiber. In full daylight it is a pale powder tone; as the light drops it moves toward rose, and by lamplight it is nearly dusty. Nothing was printed onto the rug to make that happen. Bamboo viscose is a cellulose fiber, and cellulose reflects roughly the way silk reflects, so one dye reads as several depending on the angle. The stripes are curved rather than straight and the relief between them is shallow, which keeps a large rug from looking like a large stripe.

Loom-woven puts the structure down mechanically and leaves a person to complete it; it stands between the machine-made rug and the knotted one, and the house is direct about which of the three this is. That, with viscose, makes the surface of this cream Heritage-series rug, knotted densely onto a cotton foundation on the looms at Kütahya, and carrying a vintage pattern so lightly drawn it works more like shadow than like ornament. Six sizes are made, the longest of them 260 × 370 cm (8'6" × 12'2"), the narrowest an 80 × 300 cm runner.

At 230 × 330 cm — 7'7" by 10'10" — the pattern has room to do what it was drawn for: pale transitions that settle across the surface and shift as the light in the room changes, so the rug looks slightly different at breakfast and at dusk. Cream is the neutral that makes a corridor feel wider and a small bedroom feel finished, and the design is quiet enough to run from a hallway into a kitchen without arguing with either. The viscose is where the soft shine comes from, and it is what stops a plain-ish cream rug reading as a blank.

The process starts on machines in Kütahya and ends in hands — the knots are set closely at the loom and the finish is human work, and that is what accounts for how near it comes to a knotted rug. New Zealand fleece is long in the staple and springs back well, which is why the pile stays upright under furniture instead of matting. Very little lint comes off it. Edges blur where a border would normally end, the medallion bleeds into the field, and the greens sit a step or two below full strength, so from standing height you get a soft rhythm rather than a set of shapes. Look down and the shapes are all there. That deliberate softness is why the rug can enter a modern room without turning it into a period one — it keeps the memory of a classical rug drawing while dropping the insistence.

Loom-woven means the frame of the rug is set by machine and everything after that is closed by hand, and in the Oushak workshops the hand work is women's work, edge by edge and fringe by fringe. The pile is New Zealand wool with viscose worked into the motifs for a low sheen, over a cotton foundation. It is a low pile, which leaves dust nowhere much to go and makes six square meters something you can vacuum in one pass. The series runs in small numbers, so patterns come and go. This is the woven version of the idea: the squares are drawn and woven as one surface, each carrying its own motif and its own color, and the joins are pattern rather than seams. Traditional figures sit inside modern blocks, so the whole thing can be read two ways — as a grid from standing height, and as a dozen small rugs if you get down to it. The palette stays in the warm half of the wheel, which is what keeps an active design from turning into noise.

The knots are laid down by machine at close density, and every step after the loom is hand work done by women in the villages nearby, which is why a loom-woven piece from here has a hand feel that a fully machine-made rug does not. A loom sets the ground and hands finish it, which is what loom-woven means here.

The composition is bordered several times over, and each band carries a different set of figures: eight-pointed stars, hooked octagons, the small filler motifs Anatolian weavers use to close a gap. The eye travels from the outside inward and keeps finding a new register on the way. Color concentrates in the middle. At three meters long this is a full living-room size and the drawing has been scaled for it — nothing in the pattern is so small that it vanishes under a sofa.

New Zealand wool is the fiber, chosen for a long staple that resists matting, and the pile is cut low, which is what keeps so many small motifs legible instead of blurred. Loom weaving is the middle construction: more regular than a machine-made rug, faster than one knotted knot by knot. Uşak has been weaving since the fifteenth century and the finishing is still women's work there. A shallow pile gives less underfoot than a deep one, which suits some people and not others.
