The Aren Series is Halıcızade's contemporary hand-knotted line, woven in limited numbers in Indian workshops at high knot density, in wool and in wool blended with bamboo, viscose or silk, in abstract and geometric designs, at sizes from 168 × 244 cm (5'6" × 8'0") to 312 × 437 cm (10'3" × 14'4").
Aren is what happens when hand-knotting is pointed at contemporary drawing rather than at a classical medallion. The knot, the fiber and the months at the loom are the same as on a traditional rug; the composition is abstract, the palette is narrow, and the pieces are woven in short runs. The house glosses the name, from Arabic, as the brightest grain of sand in the desert. Below: what the three yarn groups actually do, the sizes on offer, and who the series is not for.
Every knot in an Aren rug is tied and held independently.
On a machine rug the pile is locked in by the weaving action, and under heavy traffic that fixing is what eventually gives. A hand-knotted rug has no such system to fail: each knot grips its own pair of warp threads, and losing one does not loosen its neighbors. Knot density then does two jobs at once — it sets how fine a line the weaver can draw, and it sets how long the pile lasts underfoot. Aren is knotted at the fine end, which is why a single piece takes months on the loom.
Three groups run through the series, and they differ in surface, in care and in price.
| Yarn group | Surface | Colors in the series | Care | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wool and bamboo | Warm and matte, with a light sheen from the bamboo | Cream, gray, terracotta | Vacuum with a brushless head; professional washing when needed | Rooms in daily use |
| Wool and viscose | Close to silk in reflectance, at a lower price | Multicolor abstracts, mink, gray | Not suitable for home washing | Color depth that shifts with the light |
| Wool, cotton and silk | The most reflective surface in the series | Anthracite geometrics, vintage gray, mink, gray abstracts | Professional washing only | The top of the line, in low-traffic rooms |
The wool-and-bamboo group is the one to buy for a room that gets walked on. The silk group is the one to buy for a room that gets looked at. Compare the fibers across the rest of the range in wool rugs and silk rugs.
It changes value as you move around it.
A silk pile reflects light directionally, so the same rug reads pale from one end of the room and deep from the other, and reads differently again at night under lamplight. Wool scatters light instead and stays where it is put. Neither is better. A silk-blend Aren rug is a piece you notice from the doorway; a wool-and-bamboo one is a piece you notice underfoot, and it will take far more punishment.
Short enough that a sold design may not come back.
Each Aren design is woven in small numbers, and when a run is finished the house does not commit to reweaving it. Colorways and sizes are still being added to the series, so the assortment on this page is not the final shape of it. The constants are the construction and the fiber: hand-knotted, wool-based, with bamboo, viscose or silk worked in.
Mostly large rectangles, roughly 4 to 14 square meters, plus two round formats.
Rectangles run from 168 × 244 cm (5'6" × 8'0") and 168 × 246 cm at the small end, through 201 × 301 cm (6'7" × 9'11") and 249 × 308 cm (8'2" × 10'1"), up to 305 × 427 cm (10'0" × 14'0") and 312 × 437 cm (10'3" × 14'4"). Two circular pieces are made, at 240 and 298 cm across, and sit well under a round dining table or in a reading corner — see the other round rugs for comparison. The larger rectangles are living-room sizes: they want plain, low furniture in beige, cream, gray or dark wood, because the drawing is already doing the talking. For more of the same design language, see abstract patterned rugs.
One caveat, and it comes from the maker rather than from the copywriter: Aren is not the series to put in a home with a dog or a toddler. The fine knot and the silk and viscose content both reward a quiet room.
Vacuum in one direction with a brushless head, and leave washing to a professional.
The wool-and-bamboo pieces tolerate ordinary household vacuuming as long as the beater bar stays off the pile. The silk and viscose pieces are not suitable for home washing at all — viscose loses strength when wet and mats where water sits. Blot a spill with a dry cloth, pressing straight down, and never rub. Pieces from the series can be seen in person at the Ankara showroom.
Halıcızade's contemporary hand-knotted line, woven in limited numbers in Indian workshops at high knot density, in wool and in wool blended with bamboo, viscose or silk, in abstract, geometric, vintage and plain designs.
In established weaving workshops in India, by hand, on the vertical loom. Each piece takes months to complete, and the series is produced and sold under the Halıcızade name rather than by an outside brand.
Wool is the base of every piece. Depending on the model it is combined with bamboo for a light sheen, with viscose for a near-silk reflectance at a lower price, or with cotton and silk for the most reflective surface in the series.
Yes. Two circular formats are woven, at 240 cm and 298 cm across, both in gray with a silk-blended abstract design. They are usually placed under a round dining table or in a reading corner.
Mostly large rectangles between roughly 4 and 14 square meters, from 168 × 244 cm up to 312 × 437 cm, together with two round formats at 240 cm and 298 cm across.
The house does not recommend it. The fine knot count and the silk and viscose content in most of the range reward a low-traffic room, and a wool rug with a coarser knot is the more practical choice for a busy household.
Vacuum in a single direction with a brushless head. Blot spills with a dry cloth, pressing rather than rubbing. Silk and viscose pieces are not suitable for home washing and should go to a professional cleaner.
