Baby & Kids' Room Rugs

Baby and children's rugs should be natural above all. They should be the most beautiful rugs in the home. When they grow up and move away, they should say, "How much I loved my rug in my room, it was so beautiful." If necessary, save on rugs and furniture in other areas of the house; get them the best and most natural one.

A baby or kids' room rug is the floor covering for a room where the floor is played on rather than crossed. The rugs collected here are loom-woven in wool, Tencel and cotton, low in pile, bound at the edges without a loose fringe, and cut in sizes from 80 × 150 cm to 300 × 400 cm.

This page is about the objects rather than the room. Two guides cover the room itself — the nursery rug guide for a floor a baby is put down on, and the kids' room rug guide for one a five-year-old drives a desk chair across. What follows is what is actually on the shelf here: the fibers, the pile, the edge, the sizes and the care label.

What is in this collection

Two groups, a little over fifty rugs between them. The Hatıl Series is Halıcızade's own, loom-woven in Turkey in wool or Tencel over a cotton foundation and cut to a single size, 170 × 240 cm (5'7" × 7'10"). Each rug is a cream field carrying one figure drawn small toward a corner: a butterfly, a red deer with its head up, a mushroom, a telescope on its tripod, a globe.

The second group is quieter. Plain and small-patterned loom-woven grounds in gray, cream, terra, ochre, green and blue, woven in Turkish and Indian workshops in wool, wool-and-viscose, Tencel and bamboo viscose, and running through the full size ladder rather than a single size. Between the two groups the collection covers both halves of the problem — the rug a room is designed around, and the rug that simply has to be the right size and the right color.

Pile depth, in millimeters

Short, and densely woven. These are low-pile weaves rather than shag, in the band that suits the room: roughly 5 to 15 mm. At that depth crumbs, dust and dried milk stay on the surface where a vacuum can reach them, small parts stay findable instead of disappearing into the base, and a castor or a toy wheel rolls instead of sinking. A deep pile does the opposite on all three counts, and it takes a permanent dent under a cot leg within a month. Pile depth is worth asking for as a figure before buying.

Washability, as the maker states it

Read the label, not the fiber. Almost every listing in this collection specifies professional washing, which is the right instruction for a wool or Tencel pile: washed hot in a domestic drum, wool felts, and felting cannot be undone. Day to day the rug is vacuumed in one direction with a brushless head, and a spill is blotted — press a dry white cloth down and keep pressing with fresh cloth until nothing more lifts, rather than rubbing, which spreads the mark and drives it to the base of the pile.

Where a rug genuinely has to go through a home machine, that is a different construction: the flat cotton and synthetic weaves built for it are grouped in machine-washable rugs.

Edges without a loose fringe, and staying put

Every rug here is bound rather than fringed. The pile is either overlocked with yarn stitched round the edge or sewn under a flat woven tape, so there is nothing hanging free on any of the four sides. A knotted fringe is the warp of a hand-knotted rug left long at either end; it is the honest signature of that construction, and it is also a row of loose ends at exactly the height of a hand that has learned to grip.

The same logic applies across the field of the rug. A flat, tightly woven surface gives small fingers and toes nothing to catch in, and it is the surface a wheel rolls on. Then there is the floor underneath. A rug on boards or tile travels unless something holds it: an open rubber mesh pad stops the whole rug moving, and a felt-and-rubber pad does that and adds a few millimeters of cushion under a thin weave. Cut the pad 3 to 5 cm smaller than the rug on every side.

Sizes, against a cot and a play floor

Measure the clear floor rather than the room. Once a cot, a wardrobe and a chair are standing, the floor that actually gets played on is smaller than the plan suggests, and it is that area the rug has to cover.

SizeImperialWhat it covers
80 × 150 cm2'7" × 4'11"A strip beside a cot or a bed, or the floor in front of a changing unit
130 × 190 cm4'3" × 6'3"A defined play corner, set away from the furniture
160 × 230 cm5'3" × 7'7"A play floor with the cot and the wardrobe standing off the rug
170 × 240 cm5'7" × 7'10"The Hatıl Series size: room to lie down in any direction
200 × 290 cm6'7" × 9'6"A cot standing on the rug, with a walking width on the two sides you reach in from
250 × 350 and 300 × 400 cm8'2" × 11'6" and 9'10" × 13'1"Most of the floor in a larger room, with bare boards showing at the walls

Color, and the rug outlasting the phase

Mid-tones do the most work. A white rug shows every mark within a week and a flat dark one shows dust and lint just as fast; cream, gray, ochre and faded terra show neither, and a small all-over pattern breaks up the surface enough to disguise ordinary life between cleanings. If the toys, the books and the wall are already loud, the floor is the place to be quiet.

The same choice decides how long the rug lasts as an object rather than as a weave. A single figure drawn small in one corner reads differently at eleven than a field of cartoon characters, and a plain ground moves into a teen room without an argument. Wool is the fiber that survives that long — why it recovers from a bed leg is set out in wool rugs.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do the baby and kids' room rugs come in?

From 80 × 150 cm (2'7" × 4'11") up to 300 × 400 cm (9'10" × 13'1"), with 130 × 190, 160 × 230, 170 × 240, 200 × 290 and 250 × 350 cm in between. The Hatıl Series is woven in one size, 170 × 240 cm.

What are the rugs in this collection made of?

Wool, Tencel, cotton and viscose, most often two yarns together over a cotton warp. Wool recovers under a cot leg, Tencel keeps a flat low surface, and cotton weaves thin and cool. The fiber content is stated on each product page.

Do the rugs in this collection have a fringe?

No. Edges are bound — overlocked with yarn, or sewn under a flat woven tape — so nothing hangs loose at the ends. A knotted fringe is the warp of a hand-knotted rug left long, and it cannot be repaired once it has been pulled apart.

Can these rugs be washed at home?

Almost every listing here specifies professional washing, and that is the instruction to follow. A wool or Tencel pile washed hot in a domestic drum felts or shrinks. Rugs built to go through a home machine are a different construction and are grouped separately.

What pile depth are the rugs in this collection?

They are low-pile weaves rather than shag, in the band that suits this room: roughly 5 to 15 mm, woven densely. At that depth a vacuum empties the pile, small parts stay findable, and a castor or a toy wheel rolls instead of sinking in.

What is the Hatıl Series?

Halıcızade's own children's series, loom-woven in Turkey in wool or Tencel on a cotton foundation, 170 × 240 cm. Each rug is a cream field carrying one figure drawn small toward a corner — a butterfly, a red deer, a mushroom, a telescope or a globe.

Will a rug bought for a small child still work later?

A plain ground or a single small figure will; a rug covered in cartoon characters usually will not. Buying the pattern for the room rather than for the age is what lets the same rug move into a teenager's room instead of being replaced.
