Authentic pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads colorful.
This rug is made in Afghanistan. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Afganistan'da elden çıkma, yünle pamuk bir arada
An Afghan Shirvan rug, handwoven in wool over a cotton foundation and measuring 160 × 190 cm (5'3" × 6'3"), which is close to square. Shirvan is a weaving region in eastern Azerbaijan, in the Caucasus, and its patterns — small geometric medallions set in rows — have been woven by Turkmen and Afghan workshops for generations.
A single piece. The field is drawn in the same angular vocabulary Anatolian village weaving uses: hooked medallions, stepped diamonds, small filler figures scattered wherever the drawing left room.
That is why the house describes the pattern as Anatolian even though the loom stood a long way east of Anatolia. Multicolor here means the palette belongs to this piece alone, since a weaver works from the wool that has been dyed and is to hand. A near-square rug is the awkward one to place and the useful one to own — it suits a square hall, a bay, or the floor under a round table, where a long rectangle argues with the room. Afghan workshops are where a great deal of the world's handwoven wool now comes from, and the work is done on cotton warps, which hold tension better than wool and keep a large rug square.
Cotton in the foundation and wool on the surface: two fibers doing two different jobs, and the reason the piece lies flat. This is old-fashioned production with no shortcut in it and no machine anywhere in the sequence. A rug washer does the cleaning. Handwoven in Afghanistan, with cotton underneath and wool on top. A Shirvan drawing — rows of small geometric medallions, angular throughout. 160 × 190 cm (5'3" × 6'3"), near enough to square to suit a square room. Multicolored, with a palette particular to this piece. Cotton warps hold the rug square; the wool does the wearing. A rug washer, not a machine. One of one. Square rooms are commoner than square rugs, which is the whole argument for this one.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
