Multicolor Anatolian Handwoven Wool Kilim Bag

A small bag, 25 × 26 cm — ten inches square, near enough — made in Türkiye from handwoven wool kilim, with Anatolian motifs and their border worked at a scale that fits the face of it. Multicolored, in the wool that happened to be on the loom.

01The mark of slow weaving

One of one. Fitting an Anatolian drawing onto a square this size is the problem the weaver solved. A rug pattern is built of a field and a border, and at 25 cm both have to be present or the piece looks like a fragment cut off something larger. Here they are: a small field of motifs, a narrow band closing it, and colors carried over from the weaving itself. The result reads as a small complete thing rather than as an offcut. 02Coming off the loom

Kilim makes good bag cloth for a reason that has nothing to do with fashion: a flatweave is stiff, so the bag holds its shape when it is empty and does not crease along a fold the way soft cloth does.

03What Wool does

It is also a wool object that will be carried in the rain at some point, and wool takes that better than most things and dries hard.
