Red Hand-Knotted Döşemealtı Village Rug, Hand-Spun Wool

The yarn was spun on a hand spindle before any of it reached the loom — kirmen in Turkish — and that is what this rug is named for. A hand-knotted Döşemealtı village piece, 130 × 216 cm (4'3" × 7'1"), red, wool over a cotton foundation, made in Türkiye. Hand-spun yarn is uneven by definition, thicker along one stretch and thinner along the next, and the character of a rug like this follows from that.

01What the yarn is

The pile takes dye at slightly different strengths down a single thread, so the red moves rather than sits, and the surface has a texture mill-spun yarn cannot reproduce. Döşemealtı, in the hills above Antalya, is one of the southwestern weaving names: geometric drawing, red grounds, borders that repeat one hooked figure the whole way round. 02The mark of slow weaving
