Red Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Ortaköy Rug

Wool above, cotton below: the pile of this rug is wool and the warp and weft under it are cotton, which is the combination village weavers reach for when they want a piece to hold its shape. It was knotted by hand at Ortaköy, in Aksaray province, measures 117 × 246 cm (3'10" × 8'1"), and carries Anatolian drawing on a red ground. There is one. Cotton in the foundation changes the rug's behavior more than most buyers expect. It stretches less than wool does, so the rectangle stays a rectangle and the rug lies flat from the first day instead of needing a season under furniture to give up its curl.

01From the hand of the weaver

What sits on top is ordinary village work in the best sense — reds, a darker frame, figures drawn in straight lines because the loom will not permit any other kind. Made in Türkiye. On the Turkish label it is sandık eskisi — chest-old, meaning it stayed folded in storage instead of going down on a floor, which is why the surface shows none of the flattening a rug of its years would otherwise carry. No date has ever been attached to it and the house does not invent one.

02The origin of the pattern

Anything past a century is called antique in the trade, and the bands below that are semi-antique and vintage; nobody certifies any of the three. Have it washed by a professional before it goes on a floor. Hand-knotted at Ortaköy, Aksaray province, in central Türkiye. Wool pile with a cotton warp and weft, which keeps the rug square and flat.
