Red Frame-Pattern Hand-Knotted Pure Silk Rug

01From the hand of the weaver

Woven by hand in China. One piece. The center is built on repetition rather than on a medallion: a regular rhythm of red and beige forms that reads as texture from standing height and as drawing from a chair.

02Where the Border comes from

The frame is deliberately plain, which is a harder decision than it sounds, since a busy border would have doubled the information and halved the effect. Silk at this scale gives the red two lives.

03What the yarn is

Lit from the side it is close to lacquer; lit from above it drops to a deep matt and the beige comes forward. There is no cotton anywhere in it. Chinese silk was used for the warp and the weft as well as the pile, which is the traditional method and the expensive one, and the fringes are the warp threads themselves rather than a band sewn on afterwards.

04The mark of slow weaving

Months went into the weaving. A rug built this way is strong along its length and fragile at its edges, so it needs a floor where furniture is not dragged across it.
