The story of this rug

Silk rugs of this kind are the work of years, and only a handful of workshops still make them. Cream Cartouche Hand-Knotted Pure Silk Rug is tied six by six — thirty-six knots to the square centimeter — in pure silk, with panelled cartouche drawing in coffee tones over a cream ground and the pattern raised in relief.

01Underfoot

A single piece. A cartouche — pafta in Turkish — is a closed panel inside a field, and the drawing sits inside it rather than running loose across the rug. There are several of them here, each holding its own motif, with shawl figures threaded between.

02The origin of the pattern

The pile has been carved: outlines are clipped lower than the fields they enclose, so the pattern stands up from the surface and catches light along its cut edges. Cream carries it, coffee browns give the panels their weight, and greens move between the two. Thirty-six knots per square centimeter is a moderate density for silk and a very high one for anything else, and it is what lets the relief carving hold a clean edge.

03The mark of slow weaving

It was tied in China, where silk weaving runs back in an unbroken line to the beginning of the trade. A few things to know: it wants natural light to show what it is, it should be kept out of direct sun so the colors hold, animals will damage it, and Halıcızade advises against a gray-toned room, where the cream goes dull.

04After the color

Cleaning is specialist work; the yarn will not take a home solution. Hand-knotted in China in pure silk. Six-by-six weave: thirty-six knots to the square centimeter. Cartouche panels in coffee tones on a cream ground, with shawl motifs between them. The pattern is carved in relief and catches light along the cut edges. Reads best in daylight; keep it out of direct sun to hold the color. Not advised in a gray-toned scheme, and not in a house with animals. Specialist cleaning only.

One piece. Walnut, marble and dark boards are what it was drawn against, and on any of them the relief does something a flat surface cannot.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
