Gray Floral Handwoven Wool Rug, Sultanahmet Series

A handwoven rug from the Sultanahmet series with fine floral drawing worked over a gray ground, in wool, cotton and bamboo viscose. It measures 174 × 247 cm (5'9" × 8'1") and was woven in India across tens of thousands of knots.

01Reading the motif

Cream and earth tones carry the flowers; the viscose is what makes them move under light. Classical floral motifs on a modern gray is an uncommon pairing, and the house says so plainly rather than pretending it is standard. Gray removes the historical weight from the drawing without altering a line of it, so the flowers read as ornament rather than as period.

02What Wool does

Bamboo viscose picks out the petals and the fine stems; because cellulose fiber reflects at a different angle from wool, the pattern brightens and settles according to where the light falls and where you happen to be standing. The knot count runs into the tens of thousands and it is all hand labor, which is what allows drawing this fine to survive being tied at all. Wool and cotton do the structural work, viscose does none. In practice that means the flowers wear differently from the ground — viscose is softer than wool and should not take a chair leg.

03The Wool on the surface

Vacuum on suction, keep furniture feet off the motifs, and have it washed by someone who knows what viscose does when it is wet. Handwoven in India, over tens of thousands of knots.
