Modern pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is purple.
This rug is woven in India. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Four yarns in one pile, and thin lines crossing the purple
Purple Striped Hand-Knotted Wool and Bamboo Viscose Rug — a light purple ground crossed by fine horizontal lines, 82 × 142 cm (2'8" × 4'8"), knotted by hand in India, its yarns cotton, bamboo viscose, viscose and wool.
The ground moves between lilac and lavender according to the angle the light arrives at. Horizontal banding on a small rug does something specific: it widens the piece and gives it a direction, so a narrow hall or the foot of a bed gets a line to follow.
They are thin lines set close together, nearer to texture than to pattern. What carries the color is the plant-based yarn — bamboo viscose and viscose both take dye brightly and give it back, which is why the purple is never quite the same purple twice in a day. Four yarns go into it.
Cotton and the two viscoses make the silky part of the surface; wool is there for structure and to hold the shape, and it is the reason the rug does not go limp on a hard floor. It is knotted at ordinary rug thickness rather than thin, so it lies flat on boards, tile or stone without a pad fighting it.
It is not a rug for a kitchen: crumbs work into a knotted pile and then stay there. One piece. Knotted by hand in India: cotton, bamboo viscose, viscose and wool. Fine horizontal banding on a light purple ground. Reads lilac in one light and lavender in another. 82 × 142 cm, which suits a hall, a bedside or the foot of a bed. Ordinary rug thickness, so it lies flat on boards, tile or stone. Not recommended for kitchens. Professional washing; a single piece. Why not use this rug in a kitchen? A hand-knotted pile catches crumbs and small debris between the knots, and they are difficult to lift back out with a vacuum.
In a working kitchen that becomes a weekly problem rather than an occasional one. Every other room in a house is fine. What is bamboo viscose? Bamboo viscose is viscose spun from bamboo cellulose.
It behaves like other viscose: smooth, cool to the touch and reflective along the pile. It is sometimes sold as bamboo silk. It is not silk, and we call it bamboo viscose for that reason. Small rugs usually get bought last and regretted first; this one was drawn at its size rather than shrunk to it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
