There is a plain reason these are worth having: kilim weaving in Anatolia is done by fewer people every year, and small objects are where the work still reaches ordinary use. Nothing about it is fragile in the usual sense — wool is a tough fiber and the weave is flat and tight — but it is not machine washable, and the professional wash it wants is the same one a rug gets.
