Anthracite Plain Handwoven Rush Flatweave Rug, Fuji Series

Start with what it will not do: this rug cannot be washed with water, and wheeled chairs and narrow heels will break its surface. It is a handwoven flatweave in natural rush fiber, plain, anthracite, made in India for the Fuji Series, and held in one size only, 120 × 180 cm, which is 3'11" by 5'11". What you get in exchange is a texture no pile rug produces.

01From the hand of the weaver

A flatweave in a stiff natural fiber has ribs rather than a nap, so light runs along them one way and stops the other, and the surface changes as you move around it without a single color changing. Anthracite keeps it quiet — dark enough to sit under timber without looking like a doormat, flat enough that it never becomes the loudest thing in a room made mostly of glass. It is woven entirely by hand in India, from the natural rush fiber cut along the Ganges that the people who gather it call the golden fiber.

02Knot by knot, by hand

Because the fiber is stiff, the weave itself is the pattern; there is no drawing on it at all, which is why the house lists it as plain. Cleaning is dry cleaning and only dry cleaning, since it will not survive being soaked.

03How it is protected

Vacuum it lightly, and lift anything spilled before it settles. The house lays these in entrances, kitchens and winter gardens, where the light and the traffic suit them.
