On the surface: Rush and jute. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is brown.
This rug is woven in India. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

Along the Ganges in India they call jute the golden fiber, and this rug is made of it: a plain handwoven flatweave in natural brown, entirely hand-worked, from the Echo Jüt series. No pile, no dye, no drawing — the weave structure is the pattern. Jute is a bast fiber, stripped from the stem of the plant and spun into a rough, springy yarn that keeps its own color. Woven flat rather than knotted, it gives a floor texture instead of softness, and the light catches the ribs of the weave differently along the rug than across it.
It belongs beside wood — a plank floor, a timber bench, a rattan chair — and it also does the harder job of holding its own next to modern minimal furniture, where anything else with texture would look fussy. Now the part a seller would rather leave out. This is a delicate rug. Halıcızade's own instruction is to treat it gently: keep it away from wheeled office chairs and stiletto heels, both of which will break the surface.
It cannot be wet-washed at all, and dry cleaning is the only method available. The house lays it in entrances, conservatories and kitchens because those are the rooms where its texture makes sense and its fragility is easiest to manage.
Handled that way it is one of the warmest surfaces in the catalog; handled as an all-purpose rug it will not last. Handwoven flatweave in jute, made in India. Undyed — the brown is the fiber's own color. Texture in place of pattern; the weave ribs catch light along one axis. Delicate: no wheeled chairs, no heels. Dry clean only; it cannot be washed with water. The house puts it in entrances, conservatories and kitchens. Sits well with both timber and modern minimal furniture. One piece. Can a jute rug be washed? No.
Jute swells and loses its shape when it is soaked, so this rug cannot be wet-washed at home or by a rug washer. Dry cleaning is the only method, and between times the surface is kept by vacuuming and by lifting spills before they settle. Where should a jute flatweave go in a house? Halıcızade lays these in entrances, conservatories and kitchens. Those rooms suit the texture and keep the rug away from the two things that damage it fastest, which are wheeled office chairs and narrow heels working on a fiber that has no pile to protect it. It is a fiber that wants to be touched and asks for very little else, provided nothing with wheels ever crosses it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
