The surface uses Jute. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is brown.
Woven in 3 sizes, from 80 × 150 cm to 170 × 240 cm. Measuring the empty floor and choosing the nearest size always gives a better result than buying small.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

Stripes, and only stripes: a handwoven rush flatweave in brown, made in India for the Fuji Series, with the drawing kept to plain bands and nothing else on it. The size in stock is 120 × 180 cm — 5'11" long by 3'11" wide — and it is made at 80 × 150 and 170 × 240 as well. Nothing in it is knotted. Brown here is the fiber's own register rather than a decorator's brown — the warm, dry, slightly grayed tone a natural stem fiber gives when it is spun and woven without much interference.
Stripes are the honest pattern on a flatweave, because a band of color is what a loom produces most naturally and every other kind of figure has to be forced onto it. Beside oak or walnut the rug disappears into the floor; beside painted furniture it does the opposite and becomes the texture in the room. Rush is a stem fiber cut on the banks of the Ganges, and the people who work it there call it the golden fiber. Every stage of this rug was done by hand.
The stiffness that makes it interesting underfoot is also what makes it fragile: a hard point load — a heel, a castor — cuts the fiber instead of compressing it. Water is the other enemy, so this is a dry-cleaning piece and nothing else.
In return it asks almost nothing week to week, which is a vacuum and a shake outdoors. Handwoven in India as a flatweave, in natural rush fiber. Brown, with plain stripes and no other drawing. Sizes: 80 × 150, 120 × 180 (the size held) and 170 × 240 cm. Stiff underfoot — texture in place of softness. Heels and castors cut this fiber; keep both off it. Dry cleaning only; water is not an option. Suits a bedside, a conservatory, or a hall with light traffic. Every rug in this series asks something of the room it goes in, and what this one asks is that nobody crosses it in a hurry.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
