On the surface: Wool. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Southeastern Anatolia's Barak drawing, wool and nothing else
Barak is a design family before it is anything else — the name belongs to a community of southeastern Anatolia, and its kilims are known for large, blunt geometry rather than fine drawing. This is a handwoven wool Barak kilim, 147 × 280 cm (4'10" × 9'2"), multicolored, woven in Türkiye and stored rather than used. Blunt is not a criticism.
Barak weaving works at a scale readable from the doorway, with motifs sized to be seen across a room instead of examined at arm's length, and that decision is what makes a narrow, long proportion hold together rather than turning into a strip of pattern.
The store records the color as rengarenk: many of them, none appointed to lead. Handwoven in Türkiye in wool, flat, with no pile at all. In a kilim the weft is beaten down hard until the cloth is itself the design, and nothing stands above the surface to wear away, which is one reason a flatweave takes hard use differently from a knotted rug. This one has not had the chance to prove it, since it went into a chest instead of onto a floor.
Give it to a washer who knows old flatweaves. Handwoven in Türkiye, wool throughout, in the Barak design family of southeastern Anatolia. Flat-woven — weft beaten over warp, nothing standing above the surface. Large-scale geometry drawn to be read from across the room. Multicolored, with no single tone given the lead. 147 × 280 cm (4'10" × 9'2"): a long proportion for a hallway or the length of a bed. Chest-kept; colors intact, surface unworn. Washed by hand, professionally. One only. A kilim like this was made to be rolled up and carried, and it is still light enough that you could.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
