Wool pile absorbs sound; in rooms with hard floors the echo drops noticeably. In a high-ceilinged living room you hear the difference on the first day.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. It comes straight from the workshop with no reseller layer; the place on the spec sheet and the place it was woven are the same.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. A pad laid underneath holds the rug in place and stops it rubbing against the floor; besides preventing sliding it also extends its life.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Balıkesir wool, Selendi drawing, 192 × 246 cm unfaded
Two place names sit on this kilim: Balıkesir, the northwestern province it was woven in, and Selendi, the manner it follows. A handwoven wool flatweave, 192 × 246 cm (6'4" × 8'1"), multicolored, worked in cicim so the motifs stand above the ground, and kept in a chest rather than walked on. The colors have the saturation only a stored piece keeps.
Reds are still reds and not the pinks fifty years of window light would have made of them, and the cream between the motif rows has not gone to the yellow that fades into old wool. Because the drawing is raised rather than woven flat into the ground, every figure has a thin line of shadow along one edge, and that shadow separates one color from the next as much as the colors do. Made by hand, in wool, in Türkiye.
Selendi is regional shorthand for a particular density and motif set rather than for a single design, and a piece can carry the manner without having been made in the town itself — this one carries a manner and a province, which is more information than most old kilims arrive with. It has never been used and it shows: firm, square-edged, entirely unrelaxed.
Have it washed professionally before it takes any weight. Handwoven in wool in Balıkesir province, northwestern Türkiye. Selendi manner — a regional density and motif set rather than one fixed design. Cicim construction: raised motifs on a plain flat ground, each with a shadow edge. Multicolored and unfaded, having been stored out of the light. 192 × 246 cm (6'4" × 8'1") — a sitting room, or a dining table with room to push chairs back. Firm and unrelaxed; it takes time under furniture to settle. Professional washing before use. One piece. It arrives at the beginning of its working life rather than the end of it, which is the opposite of what an old kilim usually offers.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
