On the surface: Wool. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Tribal pattern; the motif is built from the yarn itself, not from dye. It does not rub away as the surface wears. The ground reads colorful.
This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Kazak motifs you can find with a palm, not just an eye
The motifs stand slightly above the ground rather than in it. That is cicim, and this is a cicim kilim: handwoven in wool in Türkiye, 180 × 285 cm (5'11" × 9'4"), multicolored, drawing on the Kazak family of Anatolian motifs, and old enough that the house files it with its rare stock. A single piece. Kazak motifs are the large, blocky, high-contrast forms of the eastern Anatolian and Caucasian border — big stepped medallions, hooked latch shapes, wide bands — and they suit cicim because cicim rewards a bold outline.
Where a plain kilim builds its pattern from the ground wefts alone, cicim lays additional colored threads over and around the warps as the weaving advances, so the motif is added rather than substituted. A palm laid flat on it finds the difference at once — the ground is smooth and the pattern is not. Light catches those raised threads at an angle and gives the drawing a shadow that a flat kilim cannot produce. The piece is described in Turkish as sandık eskisi — chest-old.
Anatolian households kept textiles in a dowry chest and brought them out for occasions, which is the single reason wool weavings from that period survive at all, and it explains a piece that has age without the wear age normally brings. All wool, no pile, no knots.
The raised cicim threads are the part that will show wear first, since they stand where a foot lands, so a low-traffic floor suits it better than a hallway. Cleaning is a specialist job. What does cicim add to a kilim? Cicim lays supplementary colored threads over the ground weave as the work proceeds, so motifs are built on top of the surface instead of being formed by the ground wefts.
The pattern sits slightly raised, and it catches light and casts a small shadow. Handwoven in Türkiye in wool, worked in the cicim technique. Kazak-family motifs: large stepped forms, hooks and broad bands. 180 × 285 cm (5'11" × 9'4"), a little over five square meters. The pattern stands proud of the ground and is legible by touch. Sandık eskisi — kept in a dowry chest, which is why it has age without hard wear. The raised threads take wear first; a quiet floor suits it better than a corridor. Specialist cleaning. One piece only. Rugs are looked at, and cicim is one of the few weavings that also asks to be touched.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
