This rug is made in Türkiye. Writing the place of production onto the spec sheet also makes clear where the price comes from.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Turning the rug a hundred and eighty degrees once a year spreads the load of sunlight and foot traffic evenly across the surface.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
A salon-sized cicim, banded in red and green, never used
At 206 × 312 cm (6'9" × 10'3") this is a whole salon floor in one handwoven wool cicim kilim, multicolored, made in Türkiye and kept folded away rather than walked on. Cicim is a flatweave with extra threads laid in above the ground weave, so the motifs stand slightly raised and catch a shadow along their edges. The pattern runs in bands across the width, and the color is listed simply as rengarenk — multicolored — because there is no dominant tone to name.
Reds, greens and creams alternate in blocks that were never reconciled into a scheme, which is usually what happens when the yarn to hand decides the palette rather than a drawing. The raised motifs sit inside those bands and take light from the side, so the kilim looks different from the two ends of the room. Handwoven in Türkiye, wool throughout, and stored rather than used — in Turkish that is a sandık eskisi, literally chest-old: woven, put into the dowry chest, and taken out decades later with the colors still where the weaver left them.
The trade-off is real and worth stating. A kilim that was never underfoot has none of the softening that use gives; this one is firm and a little stiff, and it will take a season of walking before it lies quite flat. Woven by hand in Anatolia, in wool, using cicim. Supplementary pattern threads laid over a flat ground; no pile. Banded multicolored composition — red, green and cream, none of them leading. Chest-kept rather than floor-used, which is why the colors are undimmed. 206 × 312 cm (6'9" × 10'3"): the largest piece in this group, sized for a full living room. Firm and flat; it wants a pad under it on a hard floor. Cleaning by a kilim washer. A single piece, with no second like it. A kilim this size was somebody's whole winter at the loom, and it has spent every year since waiting for a floor.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
