Orange Anatolian Handwoven Wool Cicim Kilim

This handwoven wool cicim kilim is orange before it is anything else: a multicolored Anatolian flatweave, 160 × 280 cm (5'3" × 9'2"), woven in Türkiye and stored in a chest rather than walked on.

01Which tone on the ground

Cicim means the motifs were worked with supplementary yarn as the ground went down, so they stand a little above the flat surface. Orange is the color the store records first for this piece, and it is the one deciding how the kilim behaves in a room: warm under lamplight, noticeably redder in late afternoon sun, quiet by day.

02At the loom in in Anatolia

The Anatolian motif vocabulary underneath it — hooks, lozenges, stepped rows — is drawn by the raised threads rather than by a change of ground color, which is why the design is legible from directly above and half-disappears when you look across it. Woven by hand in Türkiye, wool throughout, ground and pattern threads alike.

03When you touch it

Sandık eskisi is the label the piece carries: it was made, folded into a chest, and left there, which is why nothing has faded and also why nothing has softened. If you want a kilim that already drapes over a step or lies dead flat on the first day, this is not that kilim.

Cleaning is a job for a specialist washer. Handwoven in Türkiye; wool ground, wool pattern threads. Cicim technique — pattern yarn added above the weave, not knotted through it. Orange dominant, with green and cream in the motif rows. Anatolian geometry: hooks, lozenges and stepped repeats. 160 × 280 cm (5'3" × 9'2") — a sofa front, or a dining table where the chairs need clearance.
