Green Helvacı Handwoven Wool Cicim Kilim

Green rarely runs an Anatolian kilim, and it runs this one. A handwoven Helvacı cicim kilim, 156 × 206 cm (5'1" × 6'9"), worked in wool and cotton in Türkiye, then put away in a chest instead of onto a floor. Cicim work means the design was built up as the weaving went, thread laid over thread, with no pile anywhere on the surface. A green ground changes what the other colors do. The piece is filed as rengarenk, multicolored, with green in charge, and the tones sitting on that green behave differently than they would on cream: warm ones go darker and more serious, pale ones read almost as light rather than as color.

01From ground to pile

Helvacı drawing is close-packed and geometric, and the raised threads give each motif a thin shadow down one side, which is what keeps a busy field from turning into noise. Handwoven in Türkiye, with wool and cotton both recorded in the yarn. The two do different jobs in a flatweave — cotton holds a straight line and does not stretch, wool carries color and gives under the foot — and a weaver mixing them is choosing, motif by motif, which quality matters more at that point in the drawing.

The kilim is a chest piece and has not been walked on, so it is firm and unyielding for now. A specialist wash is what it wants, not a bathtub. Handwoven in Türkiye in the Helvacı manner, worked as cicim. Wool and cotton together: cotton for line, wool for color and give. Green ground with multicolored motif rows raised above it. Flat throughout — no pile, and a reverse that reads as a second version of the front. 156 × 206 cm (5'1" × 6'9") — a small sitting room, or the end of a bedroom floor. Chest-stored; unfaded, and stiff until it has been down a while. Cleaned by a flatweave specialist. Single piece. Green is the color a room forgives fastest, which is why a green kilim outlasts the taste that bought it.
