Tribal pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Color bands in Eşme wool, and either face can be the front
There is no pile on this piece at all. The pattern is the weave itself — colored weft passing over and under the warp — and it reads on both faces. Handwoven in wool at Eşme, a district of Uşak in western Türkiye, multicolored, 115 × 178 cm (3'9" × 5'10").
The house keeps it with its older stock. Nothing in the palette was chosen to agree with anything else, which is what people are reaching for when they call a kilim ethnic, and is really just what a household weaver did with the yarn within arm's reach.
Bands of color stack up the length of the piece with narrow figured rows between them, and where two dye lots meet the shade changes without ceremony. Nobody went back and fixed it. Fixing it would have produced a worse kilim. Wool end to end, woven flat on a domestic loom rather than a workshop's, and old enough that it sits among the house's rare pieces instead of its repeatable designs.
A flatweave has one habit worth knowing in advance: it is thin, so it travels across a polished floor unless something grips underneath it. It also has an advantage nothing with a pile can offer — when one face has taken enough light, you turn it over and start again. It goes to a specialist for washing. Made by hand at Eşme, in the Uşak district of western Türkiye. Wool from end to end, flat, and no pile on either face. Stacked color bands with narrow figured rows between them. Dye lots change mid-piece and were left as they fell. 115 × 178 cm (3'9" × 5'10") — an entry, a kitchen, beside a bed. Reversible; needs grip beneath it on a hard floor. Specialist washing. An older weaving, one of one. It was made to be used before it was ever made to be sold, and it still carries itself that way.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
