Brown ground, ochre out of local plants: a Milas weave

On the surface: Wool, Cotton. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Tribal pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is orange, brown, terracotta in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Brown ground, ochre out of local plants: a Milas weave
Milas lies inland from the Aegean in the Muğla district of southwestern Anatolia, and Turkmen households have been weaving there since they settled the area after 1261: Brown Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Milas Rug, 160 × 250 cm (5'3" × 8'2"), wool over cotton, in browns and ochres.
One piece. A Milas is recognized by its border before anything else about it. The band around the outside takes an unusual share of the whole surface, often carrying one small repeated device and sometimes carrying nothing, so the field it encloses reads narrow and the rug looks like a frame with a picture inside.
Color is the second mark. Milas weaving works madder for its reds and local plants for a range of yellows, which is where the ochre comes from, while undyed wool supplies the creams and the natural browns with no dye involved at all. Brown is the least demanding ground a patterned rug can have, and on an oak or walnut floor it settles into the wood rather than sitting on top of it — which will be exactly what one room needs and exactly what another cannot afford.
Wool makes the pile, and the warp and weft beneath are cotton. The knotting is by hand and the drawing came out of memory, so the border device does not fall the same distance from every corner.
Professional washing when it genuinely needs it. Hand-knotted in the Milas manner of southwestern Anatolia. Wool for the pile and cotton for the structure under it. A wide border taking an unusual share of the surface, with a narrow field inside it. Browns and ochres, some of the color from undyed wool rather than dye. 160 × 250 cm (5'3" × 8'2") — a sitting area, a study, or a wide hall. Milas weaving dates to Turkmen settlement of the district after 1261. The border device lands unevenly at the corners; nothing was traced. Professional washing.
A single piece. On a wooden floor it will be the last thing a visitor notices and the first thing they ask about, which is what a wide border is for.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
