02Highlights

Four things that set this rug apart

01

Wool weave

Wool is naturally hard to ignite; an ember landing on it goes out by itself without catching flame. That is why wool is chosen in front of a fireplace.

02

Authentic pattern

Authentic pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is colorful.

03

Türkiye weave

This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.

04

Professional cleaning

Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.

Red Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Sultanhanı Rug — product specifications

The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

The story of this rug

Sandık eskisi is what Turkish dealers call a rug that stayed in the bride's chest it was put away in and never went down on a floor. Here is one, knotted by hand in wool at Sultanhanı in Aksaray province: 137 × 215 cm (4'6" × 7'1"), red ground, Anatolian drawing, with a prayer niche set into the field.

01The mark of slow weaving

There is one of it. The niche is the pointed arch at one end, and once a weaver puts it there the rug acquires a direction — it is composed to be read from a single side, and it looks wrong laid the other way. Inside the arch and around it the field carries the angular figures those looms keep to, none of them curved, because a shape counted out in knotted rows cannot bend.

02How it feels underfoot

The red is not one flat red either: it steps a shade lighter and a shade darker in horizontal bands, which is what home-dyed yarn does when one small lot runs out mid-rug. Wool for the pile, wool again for the warp and the weft, tied by hand in Türkiye. Sultanhanı stands on the old Konya road around the thirteenth-century caravanserai it is named for, and rugs have carried the town's name for as long as anyone has been buying them.

Being stored rather than used shows in the pile, which still stands upright where a floor of the same years would have flattened it. What no one can supply is a date — the house calls it old and files it among the rare pieces, and old is the honest limit of the claim. Hand-knotted at Sultanhanı, out on the Aksaray plain in central Türkiye. Wool pile over a wool warp and weft. Red ground with a prayer niche and angular Anatolian figures. Tone bands from small home-dyed lots run across the red. 137 × 215 cm (4'6" × 7'1") — an entrance, a study, the foot of a bed. Kept folded in storage, so nothing has ever pressed the pile flat. No age is claimed for it beyond old; the trade words carry no certificate. Send it out for washing; never put it in a domestic machine. It has been waiting in the dark for a floor, and the first thing it will do on one is settle.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490

08

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Frequently asked

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

For international orders, shipping, duties and taxes are calculated at checkout and paid in advance; there is no cash on delivery. Rugs in stock leave Ankara within 1–3 business days.

Can I return it if I do not like it?

Yes. You can return it within 14 days of delivery, no questions asked. On international orders return shipping is paid by the buyer.

Will the color match what I see on screen?

Small differences in tone are possible depending on your screen. Open the images full screen to study the surface, and watch the review video where there is one. If you want to be sure, you can see the rug in person at our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara.

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.

Can I see the rug in Ankara?

Yes. At our showroom in Çankaya, Ankara you can see the rugs in this series and touch the weave. No appointment is needed.

Can I ask for a size that is not listed?

Custom sizes can be woven in many series. Send your measurements on WhatsApp and we will come back with a production time and a price.
