Authentic pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.

A star sits at the center, and the geometric figures ringed around it are the old Anatolian shorthand for protection, abundance and a household's tie to the land. Multicolor Anatolian Hand-Knotted Çamardı Wool Rug: wool, knotted by hand in Çamardı in the Toros foothills, in red, navy, brown and mustard, at 130 × 240 cm (4'3" × 7'10") and 125 × 228 cm (4'1" × 7'6"). Çamardı is one of the older weaving districts in Türkiye and its rugs are built the way village rugs are built: thick wool, strong color, the drawing carried in the weaver's head rather than on a cartoon.
The consequence is visible. The motifs shift by a knot or two from row to row, and the two pieces here are not the same length as one another. Red and navy carry the field, brown steadies it, and the mustard keeps the whole from turning somber. The pile is heavy wool, thick enough to insulate a stone or tiled floor, which is a large part of what these rugs were originally for.
It is a rug that improves rather than declines: wool of this weight compacts under use and the colors lose their newness and settle. Two pieces exist, one at each size. Send it out to be washed when it needs it, which will not be often. Hand-knotted in Çamardı, in the Toros foothills of southern Türkiye, from wool. A central star with geometric figures around it — protection, abundance, and the tie to the land. Red and navy in the field, with brown and mustard through it. 130 × 240 cm and 125 × 228 cm — one piece of each, and they are not identical. Thick wool pile, heavy enough to insulate a stone or tiled floor. Motifs shift slightly from row to row; the drawing was carried in memory. Professional washing, rarely needed. Where is Çamardı and why does it matter to a rug? Çamardı is a district of Niğde province in the Toros foothills of southern Türkiye, and one of the country's long-standing weaving areas.
Rugs from it are made in the village manner: thick wool, saturated color and a drawing the weaver carries in memory rather than reading from a cartoon. Why are the two pieces not exactly the same size? Because each one is finished on its own loom rather than cut from a roll.
One measures 130 × 240 cm and the other 125 × 228 cm, and the small differences in the motifs between them come from the same cause. On a hand-knotted rug that variation is the evidence of the method. Village rugs were woven to be used until they wore out, and the ones that survive are the ones somebody kept walking on.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
