Multicolor Anatolian Hand-Knotted Wool Çanakkale Rug

Sandık eskisi is the trade name for a piece like this — chest-old, woven for a dowry chest and kept there rather than laid on a floor. A multicolor Çanakkale rug, hand-knotted in wool in Türkiye, 110 × 185 cm (3'7" × 6'1"), drawn in Anatolian village motifs. Halıcızade puts no year on it, so neither do we. Çanakkale sits at the northwest corner of Anatolia, and the weaving that carries its name is village work: bold geometry, motifs held in memory rather than copied from a cartoon, and color chosen for contrast instead of for harmony.

01The tone of the ground

That is where the multicolor comes from: tones set at full strength beside one another with nothing graded between them. The drawing shifts by a knot or two as the rows go up, because the weaver was counting rather than tracing.

02The mark of slow weaving

Nothing on it repeats exactly. Wool throughout, knotted by hand. A rug that spent its life folded arrives with the evidence of it: expect crease lines where the folds were, some unevenness in the pile, and tones that have shifted at different rates from one part of it to another. None of that is damage, and all of it is the reason the piece still exists.

03How it feels underfoot

Wool of this age wants a washer who works on old rugs and no one else. The trade's age words are conventions with no authority behind them — a hundred years for antique, fifty to a hundred for semi-antique, twenty and up for vintage — and this rug has not been measured against any of them. What does sandık eskisi mean? Chest-old. It describes a rug made for a dowry chest and kept inside one instead of being used, brought out for guests and folded away again.

04From the hand of the weaver

Pieces kept that way survive in far better condition than rugs of the same age that were walked on, and they usually arrive with fold lines. What is a Çanakkale rug? It is village weaving from the northwest corner of Anatolia, around Çanakkale. The work is bold and geometric, the motifs are carried by the weaver rather than drawn from a cartoon, and the colors are set against each other for contrast instead of being graded into one another.
