Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is colorful in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Karakeçili saddlebag in wool: two pockets on one strip
Not a rug — a heybe, the double saddlebag a Yörük household threw over an animal to move its belongings. Handwoven wool, 50 × 141 cm (1'8" × 4'8"), multicolored, made by Karakeçili weavers in the Manisa region of Türkiye. A heybe is woven as one long strip with a pocket at each end, so the middle section lies over the animal's back and the two bags hang level on either side.
That construction is still legible in the piece: two patterned faces, a plainer band between them, and the closures along the pocket mouths. The Karakeçili are one of the Yörük groups, and the drawing is what nomadic weaving does everywhere — small, dense, repeated geometry carried in the weaver's memory rather than copied off a cartoon, in wool dyed at full strength. Handwoven in wool, flat rather than knotted. The thing to understand about a heybe is that it was a tool.
It carried grain, bedding and clothing, and it was built to survive being loaded and unloaded every day. What arrives in a shop today is furniture instead of equipment: the two pockets take cushion inserts, the whole strip hangs on a wall, or it goes over the arm of a bench. It will not lie flat on a floor, and it was never meant to.
Professional cleaning. What is a heybe? A heybe is a Turkish saddlebag: one woven strip with a pocket at each end, laid across a pack animal so a bag hangs on either side. Yörük households used them to move grain, bedding and clothing between summer and winter pasture. Can a saddlebag be used indoors? Yes, though not on a floor. The two pockets take cushion inserts and become a pair of woven cases, the whole strip hangs flat against a wall, and it can also be laid over the back of a bench.
Its shape is wrong for anything underfoot. Handwoven in wool by Karakeçili Yörük weavers, Manisa region, Türkiye. One strip, two pockets: 50 × 141 cm (1'8" × 4'8") overall. Multicolored, with dense small-scale nomadic geometry on both faces. Flatwoven, with no pile. A wall piece, a cushion pair or a bench cover, not a floor piece. Cleaning by a professional. A single piece. It was made to be filled, and it still looks better with something in it than hanging empty.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
