The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Tribal pattern; the motif edges sit on the order of the warp, so they come out sharp. The ground is colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Knowing where a rug comes from is not only a matter of curiosity: yarn, dye and weaving habits change from region to region.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. In a rug in direct sun the color opens unevenly over the years; drawing the curtain halfway or turning the rug now and then prevents that.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Root-dyed reds, blues and yellows, a kilim 77 cm wide
At 77 × 102 cm (2'6" × 3'4") this is a kilim you can carry under one arm — a small flatweave from the Van region of eastern Türkiye, woven by hand in wool, dyed with root and plant dyes, and covered edge to edge in color. Nothing about it was made for a showroom. There is one. Small kilims from the eastern provinces were domestic objects: a seat cover, a cradle cloth, a length of weaving done to use up yarn between larger pieces.
Because the yarn came from whatever had been dyed that season, the palette is not a scheme — reds, blues, greens and yellows land next to each other at their own strengths, and the bands change width as the weaver's supply of one color gave out.
Held to the light the flatweave shows the small slits where two colors meet without interlocking, which is how a kilim is built. Wool throughout, worked in Türkiye. Root dyes are the reason the colors sit rather than shout: plant dye rarely reaches full saturation, and it also settles unevenly from batch to batch, so a single red can arrive on the loom three different reds. There is no pile here at all, only weft — which makes it thin, reversible and easy to move, and also means it will slide on a hard floor unless something grips it. Handwoven in wool in the Van region of eastern Türkiye. Without pile of any kind — weft and warp alone, usable either way up. Colored with root and plant dyes, which vary from batch to batch. Reds, blues, greens and yellows at full strength, unmatched to each other. 77 × 102 cm (2'6" × 3'4") — a doorway, a seat, a stretch of wall. Light enough to slide; use a grip pad on a hard floor. Have a professional clean it; a home wash gains nothing. A single village weaving; nothing else in the catalog matches it. It cost its weaver a few days and it will outlive most of the furniture it is put beside.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
