On the surface: Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Tribal pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is red, colorful.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Kars Sevan in wool: red leads, and the warp never shows
Kars sits in the far northeast of Türkiye, high and cold, on the old Caucasian frontier, and its flatweaving shares a vocabulary with the weaving on the other side of that border. This is a Kars Sevan kilim: handwoven in wool, multicolored with red leading, 184 × 316 cm (6'0" × 10'4"), and one piece only. Kars is a long way from the Aegean workshops, and the flatweaving of the northeast has always been the more angular tradition — figures built out of straight edges and steps, with the palettes running darker.
Red carries this one, and the rest of the colors are arranged around it. It is recorded as an old piece and sits in the house's rare-pieces holding, which is how things of this kind come in: singly, and not to order. Wool for the warp, the weft and the pattern, worked weft-faced so the colored threads are packed down until the foundation vanishes and the design belongs to the cloth rather than to a layer on top of it.
At 184 × 316 cm it will cover the floor of an ordinary sitting room at a fraction of the weight of a knotted rug the same size. Two honest limits go with that. A kilim slides on a hard floor and needs a pad, and with no pile it has no capacity to absorb anything at all — a virtue when you sweep it and a problem when a glass goes over. Handwoven in wool in Kars, northeastern Türkiye. Weft-faced kilim: the colored wefts are packed down until the warp disappears. Red-led multicolor, in the angular drawing of the northeast. 184 × 316 cm (6'0" × 10'4") covers an ordinary sitting-room floor at a fraction of a knotted rug's weight. Recorded as an older piece, and kept in the house's rare-pieces group. Use a pad; a kilim slides on hard floors. No pile means no absorbency, and a spill goes through. Cleaning goes to a kilim specialist.
One piece. Kars kilims were made for stone floors and long winters, and they behave the same way in a centrally heated room.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
