El Dokuma Anadolu Desenli Yün Sandık Eskisi Bicar Halısı, koyu erik-lacivert bir zemini uçtan uca küçük ölçekli, tekrar eden bir desenle doldurur. Motifler tek başına seçilecek kadar küçüktür ve zeminde boş alan bırakmaz; merkeze doğru kırmızı bir madalyon belirir ama zeminin yoğunluğu içinde ancak yaklaşınca ayrılır. Krem bordür bu koyu yüzeyi keskin biçimde çerçeveler ve halının sınırını netleştirir. Uzaktan bakıldığında zemin neredeyse tek koyu bir yüzeydir; yaklaştıkça desen katman katman açılır.

Bu ölçekte bir tekrar deseni, dokumanın sıklığına doğrudan bağlıdır: motif küçüldükçe bir motifi tamamlamak için gereken düğüm sayısı azalır, dolayısıyla düğüm seyrekse motif okunmaz hâle gelir. Bu halıda motiflerin kenarları ayrık kaldığına göre düğüm sırası sıktır. Sık dokunan halılar aynı zamanda daha ağırdır ve elle kaldırıldığında bu fark hissedilir; yere serildiğinde de kolay kolay kıvrılmaz, kenarları düz oturur. Full description

Bijar rugs are rolled and not folded, and that one habit explains most of what matters about this piece. A hand-knotted rug 131 × 199 cm (4'4" × 6'6"), wool pile over a cotton foundation, on a dark plum-navy ground filled end to end with a small repeating motif and framed in cream. Sandık eskisi: kept in a chest for years, laid out rarely.

The motifs are small enough to be picked out one at a time and they leave no empty ground anywhere. Toward the middle a red medallion surfaces, but the field around it is worked so densely that it separates from the pattern only as you come close. The cream border cuts hard against the dark field and makes the edge unmistakable. Seen from the far side of a room it reads as a single dark plane; the nearer you get, the more layers open.

Motif scale is a direct function of knot density. The smaller a motif, the fewer knots there are to build it, so a loose weave turns small motifs into mush; these hold their edges, which means the rows are tight. Tight weaving carries consequences. The rug is heavy in the hand; it lies flat without curling at the corners; and it is stiff enough that a hard crease is a bad idea, which is why this group is stored rolled. Chest folds show for the first days and then drop out. Wash it professionally and vacuum with a plain head.

Why are Bijar rugs rolled instead of folded?

They are woven and beaten down so tightly that the foundation is nearly rigid. Folding a rug of this construction puts a hard crease through the warp, which can crack it. Rolling spreads the bend over the whole width and does no damage, which is why the trade stores them that way.

What does sandık eskisi mean?

It is the Turkish term for a rug that spent most of its life folded in a storage chest rather than on a floor. Such pieces are old in years but lightly used, so the pile is fuller than the age would suggest. The trade-off is fold lines, which settle within days of use.

A dark, densely drawn rug anchors a pale room the way a heavy piece of furniture does, and it takes footmarks far less readily than a light one.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
