Brown Vintage Oushak Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Rug, 179 × 260 cm (5'10" × 8'6"): a ground running from brown into beige, with vintage motifs distributed evenly across it rather than gathered into a center, and silk threaded through the drawing. Knotted in Türkiye by Has Halı. There is one of it. Nothing on it is centered, and that is a practical virtue.

01Up close to the pattern

The motifs sit at even intervals so no part of the rug is the part you are meant to look at, which means a sofa can stand anywhere on it without covering the composition. Uşak's old drawing lies underneath all of it, the lines softened. The silk sits inside the figures and does what a gilt frame does to a painting — it marks the edge and stops the pattern dissolving into the ground. The wool comes from Erzurum, where the fleece keeps enough natural oil that it strengthens with use instead of going lifeless, and the silk in the motifs is fine enough to catch light from across a room.

02Knot by knot, by hand

The whole rug is worked with the traditional Turkish double knot, closely set, and the maker's tuğra is woven into the reverse where it can be checked. It is a quiet rug rather than a loud one, and that is the point of it.

03What the yarn is

Take it to a rug washer; nothing at home will do. Hand-knotted in Türkiye by Has Halı, tuğra on the reverse. Erzurum wool in the ground, silk in the motifs. Motifs spread evenly, with no central medallion to work around. Uşak drawing, softened and reworked for a contemporary room. Dense double knotting throughout. 179 × 260 cm (5'10" × 8'6") — a full seating group fits inside it. Rug-washer only. Set beside oak and undyed linen it reads as a household object; put a chrome-and-glass table on it and it becomes the oldest thing in the room by a century.
