On the surface: Wool, Silk. The shine of the rug, its weight and what its care asks all follow from that choice.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Plain middle, heavy brown-and-burgundy edge, wool with some silk
Most of the drawing is in the border and the middle is left comparatively quiet: a cream hand-knotted wool rug of 266 × 199 cm (8'9" × 6'6"), made in Anatolia, wool for the pile with silk in a few passages, its wide frame carrying brown and burgundy around a plainer cream field. A single piece. That distribution is a decision rather than an accident. A heavy border and a calm center means furniture can stand on the rug without covering anything worth seeing, which is why the arrangement keeps returning in Anatolian weaving.
The border tones run brown into burgundy, deep enough to hold the rectangle firmly, and inside them the cream is broken only by fine drawing that reads as texture at standing height. The contrast between the two is what gives the piece its weight in a room. Silk turns up in some passages and not others, which is how the house describes the rug and also how it behaves, since only part of the surface carries the extra light.
Anatolian weavers tied every knot, and tied them close together, and close knotting is why the surface feels firm underfoot instead of plush. This is a pale ground with a lot of area to it, and a household with dogs should weigh that first.
Professional washing once vacuuming stops being enough. Tied by hand in Anatolia — wool pile, silk in a few passages. 266 × 199 cm (8'9" × 6'6") — long enough for a sofa and two chairs. Wide frame in brown and burgundy around a quieter cream field. Oushak-derived drawing, held mainly in the border. Close knotting; the surface is firm rather than plush. Furniture can stand on the field without hiding the pattern. A pale ground over a large area — worth weighing if there are animals in the house. Professional washing.
One piece. Rugs built this way get chosen for the border and lived on for the middle.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
