The surface uses Wool, Silk. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built row by row as the weaving advances; it is only seen whole once it comes off the loom. The ground color is beige.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. The place of production is written on the spec sheet; it comes straight from the workshop that wove it, with no reseller chain.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. For everyday care use a head without a beater bar and follow the direction of the pile; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Oushak flowers without hard outlines, beige running into cream
Hand-knotted wool rug in beige, 170 × 220 cm (5'7" × 7'3"), with soft Oushak flowers drawn across a field of beige and cream and silk worked into passages of the pattern. It was made in Anatolia, by weavers whose numbers fall every year. There is one of it. Nothing here is loud.
The flowers belong to the Oushak family but are drawn without hard outlines, so they read as pattern rather than as botany, and the beige-to-cream range keeps them from separating from the ground. Brown appears in the drawing where the design needs a stop.
In a room floored or furnished in wood the whole thing settles at once; the pale ground also does the useful work of lifting a room that gets little light. This is a classical rug for someone who does not want to be reminded of it on every walk through the door. Wool through the pile, with silk in some passages of the pattern, where it takes the light differently and marks out the drawing.
The knots are set close, and that density is why a rug of this age of design keeps its shape instead of spreading. Hand weaving in Anatolia has thinned badly over two decades, and what comes off village looms now is worth something for that alone. A professional wash every few years brings the color back to where it started. Hand-knotted in Anatolia, entirely by hand. Wool pile with silk worked through parts of the pattern. Oushak-derived flowers, softly drawn, in beige, cream and brown. Dense knotting, which is what holds the shape through years of use. 170 × 220 cm (5'7" × 7'3") — a hall, a bedroom, or a small sitting room. One piece; Anatolian hand weaving of this kind is becoming scarce. Professional cleaning every few years. Rugs like this pass to the next person in a family without anybody formally deciding it.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
