Cream Classic Floral Hand-Knotted Wool and Viscose Rug — a cream field worked with fine curling flower motifs and closed by a wide classical frame, hand-knotted in Pakistan, the pile wool with viscose in it, measuring 173 × 228 cm (5'8" × 7'6"). The flowers are drawn small and pale, so from standing height the rug reads as plain cream and only resolves when you are standing on it. That is the trick of the drawing. At a distance the field is quiet; up close it is dense, layered and full of turns, and the border behaves like a picture frame around it, with every corner resolved rather than run off the edge.

01Color, by the light

Cream keeps a medium-sized room bright without letting it go cold. In a bedroom it takes the hardness off north light. In a sitting room it will show whatever is dropped on it, and that is simply true of any pale rug. Wool gives the pile its body and its resilience; viscose is blended in for the light, and the mix is what makes the surface faintly slick under the hand instead of dry.

02Knot by knot, by hand

It was knotted in Pakistan by hand, motif by motif, over months. At 173 by 228 it is a mid-sized rug — big enough for the front legs of a sofa and a low table to stand on, not big enough to run under everything in a room.
