Cream Floral Oushak-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Flowers first: the motifs on this small hand-knotted rug are Oushak forms redrawn as blossoms, closer to an English garden print than to an Anatolian medallion. Cream, beige, mink and gold-yellow, 86 × 159 cm (2'10" × 5'3"), woven in India in wool with viscose worked through the pattern.

01From the hand of the weaver

One piece. At this size the drawing has to be fine or it does not read at all, and the knot density here is high enough to carry it. The flowers are set in a soft, pastel register — no strong contrast anywhere — and the viscose in the motifs catches light where the wool does not, so the pattern lifts slightly out of the ground without any change of color.

02Color, by the light

In front of a cream or coffee-toned sofa it looks intentional rather than added. Beside a bed or in a narrow hall it does the same work at a smaller scale. Weavers in India knotted it by hand in a craft tradition that has run there for centuries, and a small rug at this density is still months of work.

03What the yarn is

The pile is wool, the motifs carry viscose for the sheen, and cotton beneath both of them makes the foundation and holds the rug square. The palette — cream, beige, mink, gold — is the kind that fits a classical room and a modern one without adjusting.
