Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is red, colorful, black in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Flowers built out of steps: a Karabagh kilim that traveled
A handwoven wool kilim from Karabagh, 209 × 312 cm (6'10" × 10'3"), flat-woven with a floral field led by red and black across better than six and a half square meters. The Turkish calls it a göçmen kilim — an émigré kilim, one that traveled with the household that owned it.
There is one. Floral drawing in a flatweave is a contradiction the weaver has to solve. A kilim builds its pattern from wefts meeting along vertical lines, which produces steps and angles naturally and curves only with difficulty, so a flower in this technique is assembled out of small stepped blocks that resolve into a petal at a distance and dissolve into geometry up close.
Karabagh weaving has a long habit of doing this, and the red and black here give the flowers a ground dark enough that the stepping does not read as roughness. Stand back and it is a garden; kneel down and it is arithmetic. All wool, flat-woven, with the same face on both sides.
Six and a half square meters of kilim is a full living-room floor and it weighs a fraction of what a knotted rug that size would, which is the practical reason kilims traveled with people at all.
Age and travel leave marks: expect repairs at the ends, a seam where two halves were joined if the loom was narrower than the piece, and edges that have been rebound. None of that is damage in a weaving of this kind, and all of it is worth looking at closely before deciding.
Washing by someone who works on old flatweaves. Handwoven in wool in Karabagh, flat-woven with no pile. 209 × 312 cm (6'10" × 10'3"), over six and a half square meters. A floral field led by red and black, built from stepped blocks rather than curves. A göçmen or émigré kilim — it moved with the household that owned it. Reversible, and light for its size; kilims traveled because of that. Expect end repairs, rebound edges, and possibly a center seam. Washing by someone experienced with old flatweaves. One piece, and no other like it. Kilims of this size were the one large thing a family could roll up and carry, and this one has the marks of having been carried.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
