Copper Striped Hand-Knotted Rug

This is a hand-knotted rug in copper, 169 × 242 cm (5'7" × 7'11"), knotted in India, its surface a mixture of cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose worked together with wool, ruled across with fine stripes. Copper is not orange and not brown.

01Color, by the light

In flat daylight it sits close to the earth tones around it; under a low lamp cinnamon and bronze come up out of it, and the same rug that looked quiet at noon looks warm at nine. The stripes are thin and closely spaced, more a ruling than a pattern, and they give the surface a direction — laid along the length of a room they stretch it, laid across they widen it.
