Cream Line-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool and Viscose Rug

A hand-knotted rug in cream, 228 × 328 cm (7'6" × 10'9"), knotted in India from wool with cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose, its cream ground crossed by curving lines in light brown and beige. Nothing on it is straight.

01Up close to the pattern

It exists in this size as a single piece. The lines do not form a motif so much as a current — they bend, widen and thin the way water marks sand, and they are drawn in tones close enough to the ground that the whole thing reads as texture from the doorway and as pattern from a chair.

02Color, by the light

Cream is not one color here either: in daylight the field runs to off-white and pale vanilla, and by evening it drops to beige and milk-coffee. The brown lines are the fixed point that lets you see the rest moving. Every loop was tied by hand in India.

03What the yarn is

Wool gives the surface its body and holds the rug's shape over years of use; the cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose worked alongside it are what make the hand of it soft rather than springy. Thickness is conventional, so it sits down properly on the floor and does not ride up at a door.

04When you walk in

One restriction the house is direct about: keep it out of the kitchen. A pale, softly spun surface and cooking are a poor combination, and no amount of care changes that. Hand-knotted in India, loop by loop. Wool worked with cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose. Cream ground with curving light brown and beige lines, no straight edges anywhere. The cream shifts between off-white, vanilla and beige as the light changes. 228 × 328 cm (7'6" × 10'9") — a large sitting room, front legs of the furniture on. Standard pile thickness; it clears most interior doors. Not recommended for kitchens. Professional cleaning; one piece in this size. Against pale oak it nearly disappears, which in a room with a lot of furniture in it is the useful outcome.
