White and Anthracite Damask Handwoven Bamboo Viscose Rug

Damask is a scrolling repeat that entered European weaving from Damascus silk, and here it is handwoven in India in white, gray and anthracite, in bamboo viscose over a cotton foundation. It is made from 90 × 150 cm to 275 × 370 cm (2'11" × 4'11" to 9'0" × 12'2"). Three tones do the work a fourth color would otherwise do.

The ground is white or near it, the scroll is drawn in gray, and anthracite closes the darkest passages of the figure, so the damask registers as depth rather than as outline. Bamboo viscose is a regenerated cellulose fiber, and it is in the rug for one reason: it holds a sheen that cotton cannot, which lets the drawn part of the pattern catch light while the ground stays quiet. Hand weaving in India over a cotton foundation is why the size range reaches as wide as it does — the same drawing is redrawn at each scale rather than tiled from a fixed repeat.

The pile is on the low side, so the pattern stays legible instead of blurring underfoot.
