The story of this rug

A damask repeat is drawn to run for meters, and this rug measures 80 × 150 cm (2'7" × 4'11"), so it carries a section of the pattern rather than the whole of it — worth saying first. Hand-knotted in India in wool, bamboo viscose and cotton, silver-gray, with the figure worked in the shiny fiber against a matt ground. A cropped repeat is not a fault.

01From the hand of the weaver

It is how damask has always looked on anything smaller than a wall, and what you get is a length of scroll running off two edges, reading as a piece of a much larger cloth — precisely the impression the weave was invented to give. Silver is the right register for it too.

02The Wool on the surface

On a mid-gray ground the figure separates by luster instead of by color, arriving and disappearing as you cross the room, where a strong color contrast would have made the fragment look cut rather than continuous. Wool, bamboo viscose and cotton are what the record gives. Bamboo viscose is sold elsewhere as bamboo silk; the house calls it viscose, because that is what it is, and it is the fiber carrying the sheen while the wool holds the pile up and the cotton sits underneath in the foundation.

03How many centimeters, which room

At this size the rug will travel unless it is held down, and a pad matters more here than the floor it sits on. Bamboo viscose is weak when wet, so dry blotting only. Hand-knotted in India, from wool, bamboo viscose and cotton. Silver-gray ground with a damask scroll worked in the lustrous fiber. The figure shows by shine rather than by color, and changes with the angle you stand at. Bamboo viscose is sometimes sold as bamboo silk; it is viscose, and the house names it so. The size is 80 × 150 cm (2'7" × 4'11") — doorway, bedside, landing. The repeat is cropped at this size, as damask always is on a small piece. A non-slip pad is not optional on a rug this light. Dry blotting, then a wash by a professional. Small rugs get chosen quickly and then looked at for years, which is an argument for one with something in it.

Which size fits your room?

The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:

Living room

At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.

Dining room

It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.

Bedroom

Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.

Hallway · runner

Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.

Care — three rules

Vacuum regularly

Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.

Treat spills before they dry

Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.

Leave washing to a professional

Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.

Which size should I choose for a living room?

At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.

How long does shipping take, and what does it cost?

Can the rug be used over underfloor heating?

It depends on the pile height. Low-pile woven rugs work with underfloor heating and do not block the heat. If you are unsure, send the product code to Client Services on WhatsApp.

How does the price change between sizes?

Pricing is by the square meter. The price per square meter is shown next to the price, and it updates as you select a size.
