The surface uses Wool, Silk. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is beige, brown in the ground.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Beige and brown, 196 × 254 cm, silk only in the drawing
The drawing starts in the center and the frame keeps it in. A hand-knotted rug of 196 × 254 cm (6'5" × 8'4") made in Anatolia in beige, cream and brown, wool doing the field and silk worked into parts of the pattern, in motifs descended from Oushak weaving. Each motif opens like a flower and the next begins where the last one finished, so the field fills from the middle outward rather than repeating a fixed unit.
The border is a wide plain frame that competes with none of it — its job is to stop the drawing, and it stops it cleanly. Beige holds the ground, cream does the outlining, brown weights the corners. Where silk was used the same beige turns bright, so the pattern separates from the field by light instead of by color. Knotted in Anatolia by the traditional method, at a density high enough to carry motif drawing that fine.
Wool is the body of the rug and silk appears only inside the pattern, which is the older way of using it: silk as a highlight, never as a whole surface. Fewer weavers work at this density with each passing year.
Professional cleaning keeps the silk from dulling, and a rug with silk in it belongs away from the sunniest part of a room. Hand-knotted in Anatolia in the classical Turkish manner. Wool field with silk worked into parts of the pattern for contrast in light. Beige ground, cream outlining, brown weighting the corners. Dense knotting, which is what allows the fineness of the motif drawing. A wide plain border frames the field and closes the pattern off. 196 × 254 cm (6'5" × 8'4"), for a seating group or a bedroom. Professional washing; keep it out of direct sun so the silk holds its brightness. Beside walnut and stone it looks as though it was always in the room; against white walls the silk is the only thing that moves.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
