Cream Damask Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

Damask began as a way of weaving silk in which the pattern shows by catching light rather than by changing color, and that is what has been knotted here: a cream damask rug, 173 × 247 cm (5'8" × 8'1"), hand-knotted in India, wool and cotton at the surface with bamboo viscose carrying the figures.

01Reading the motif

One piece, no second. The repeat is the classical one — a stem turning back on itself, opening into a leaf, closing again — set at a scale large enough that a single figure is legible from standing height. Cream holds it and the pastel grays inside the figures do the shading.

02What Wool does

Because the bamboo viscose lies at a slightly different angle to the wool, the pattern brightens and dulls as you walk the length of it, which is the trick the original silk damasks were performing four hundred years ago. It was tied by hand in India at close knot spacing, which is what keeps the curve of a stem from breaking into steps. The surface mixes wool with cotton; the figures are bamboo viscose, a cellulose yarn spun for shine.

03Color, by the light

Cream is a decision with a consequence, and it is worth saying plainly: this is a pale rug and it hides nothing that gets dropped on it, so it belongs where the traffic is light. Cleaning is a workshop job. Hand-knotted in India at close knot spacing. Wool and cotton at the surface; bamboo viscose in the damask figures.
