Cream Damask Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

The pattern is named for Damascus, where the figure — a stem that turns, opens into a leaf and folds back over itself — traveled on silk long before anybody put it underfoot. Here it is tied by hand in India on a cream ground, from wool, cotton and bamboo viscose, at 92 × 148 cm (3'0" × 4'10"). One piece. At this size the repeat has to be drawn small or the edges would cut it in half, and it is: the figures sit close together and read as texture from standing height rather than as separate motifs.

01Color, by the light

Cream does two jobs at once here, holding the drawing and keeping a small rug from adding visual weight to a small room. Where the bamboo viscose falls the figure lifts half a tone in daylight; under a lamp the whole surface settles back down. Knotted by hand in India, with wool and cotton making the ground and bamboo viscose reserved for the figure, so the pattern and the field are genuinely different materials rather than the same yarn in two colors.

02A question of size

Two things about a pale rug of this size deserve saying plainly. Nothing dropped on it goes unnoticed, and at 92 × 148 cm it is light enough to migrate toward whichever room is busiest. Keep it out of the entrance.

03From ground to pile

Cleaning goes to a specialist, and a cream pile gives you no second option. Hand-knotted in India, in the classical damask repeat. Wool and cotton make the ground; the figure alone is bamboo viscose. Cream, with the pattern showing by sheen more than by color. 92 × 148 cm (3'0" × 4'10") — a bedroom, a study, the foot of a bed. Pale ground; wrong for a hall where outdoor shoes come through.
