On the surface: Wool, Silk. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Traditional pattern. The ground and the motif are not parts of separate processes but of the same weave; the two advance together. The ground tone is beige, cream.
This rug is woven in Türkiye. We write down where it comes from, because we want to be able to name the workshop when someone asks.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. What wears a rug down over the years is not a stain but the dust that settles at the base of the pile and grinds the fibers from inside with every step.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Hexagons in the border, a flower in each, damask over the field
A damask is a pattern that repeats on a grid and reads as one continuous surface, and that is what covers this rug: a cream hand-knotted wool rug of 193 × 276 cm (6'4" × 9'1"), made in Anatolia, a wool pile with occasional silk, its border built from hexagons with a flower inside each. One piece. The repeat is regular and the effect is calm, with no medallion, no focal point and nothing asking to be looked at first.
Because the figures are evenly spaced, the rug can be turned or moved without the composition changing, which is a practical advantage in a room whose furniture gets rearranged. The hexagonal cells in the border are the one place the drawing changes character: each holds a small flower, and the geometry around them belongs to older Anatolian pattern-making rather than to the damask. Knotted by hand in Anatolia, the field wool and the occasional figure silk, tight enough that the damask repeat stays crisp instead of softening into a texture.
Cream, beige and brown pass into one another gradually across the surface, so the rug lightens a room without introducing a color to it. The plainer a damask is drawn, the more the knot count matters, and it is the knot count that keeps the grid from wandering.
Professional washing. Knotted by hand in Anatolia — a wool pile with occasional silk. 193 × 276 cm (6'4" × 9'1") — a living room, bedroom or wide passage. Damask repeat across the field, with no medallion and no focal point. Border of hexagonal cells, each containing a flower. Cream, beige and brown in gradual transitions. Can be turned or repositioned without changing the composition. Close knotting keeps the repeat crisp. Professional washing.
A single piece. Damask was a cloth pattern long before it was a rug pattern, and this is what happens when weavers borrow across trades.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
