On the surface: Wool, Bamboo, Cotton. The kind of yarn sets the hand of the rug, its shine and what its care asks, all together.
Modern pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is white, cream.
This rug is woven in India and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Small squares on cream, wool with viscose, knotted in India
Thin ruled lines and square forms on a pale cream ground: a hand-knotted rug, 199 × 301 cm (6'6" × 9'11"), knotted in India in wool alongside cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose. The geometry is drawn small and the ground is left to do most of the work.
This size exists as one piece. The drawing is restrained to the point of being architectural — squares set out at intervals, lines ruled between them, nothing curved and nothing repeated closely enough to become a texture.
What changes is the cream. Under daylight it throws off ivory; under a warm bulb it drops to beige, and the geometric figures, which are only a shade or two away, come and go with it. A pattern that appears and recedes with the hour is more interesting to live with than one that holds still, and it is why a rug this plain does not get boring. Master weavers in India knotted it by hand.
The plant-based yarns in it — cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose — are what make the surface soft to the touch; the wool is what keeps the rug's shape and its pile standing after a few years of furniture on it.
Pile height is conventional, so it settles into a room without altering the level of the floor. The kitchen is the one room the house tells you not to put it in, and the reason for that is the pale ground rather than the fiber. Hand-knotted by master weavers in India. Wool holds the structure; cotton, bamboo viscose and viscose account for how soft it feels. Fine ruled lines and small square forms on a pale cream ground. Reads ivory by daylight and beige beneath a warm bulb. A living room, a bedroom or a wide landing: 199 × 301 cm (6'6" × 9'11"). Conventional pile height; comfortable barefoot. Suitable everywhere in the house except the kitchen. Professional cleaning.
A single rug at this size. A room with a lot of hard edges in it — glass, metal, stone — is where this one stops looking plain and starts looking deliberate.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
