01Coming off the loom

A kilim is a flatweave: the pattern is built in the weft, and there is no pile at all. There is one. The squares run in an even rhythm from end to end, which is what keeps a small format from looking like an offcut.

02Which tone on the ground

Blue against the light ground gives it more contrast than most rugs this size carry, and the viscose in the mix catches light along the weft lines so the blue brightens and dulls as you cross it.

03The Wool on the surface

Nothing about the drawing is regional or antique; it was made for a young room, a study corner, a modern flat, and it does that job without pretending otherwise. Three fibers, three jobs: viscose for the sheen, wool for warmth and body, cotton for the strength that holds a flatweave straight. Because there is no pile it weighs almost nothing and can be picked up with one hand and moved to another room, which is how small kilims actually get used.
