Green Karabagh-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug

In the weaving villages of Afghanistan, master weavers work the double knot by hand, and this is what came off that loom: a Green Karabagh-Pattern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, 171 × 239 cm (5'7" × 7'10"), green tones building the ground with orange and red flowers alive on top of them.

01After the color

Only one was made. Green is the harder ground to place. It has none of blue's neutrality and none of red's authority, and it asks the room to agree with it rather than the other way round — which is why the flowers here are worked in orange and red, the two colors that keep a green field from going cold.

02Up close to the pattern

The traditional Karabagh motifs sit at intervals across the surface, drawn in a modern hand, open where the old ones were dense. Beside solid wood the effect is settled and classical; in a minimal room the rug supplies the age that nothing else in the space has. Wool makes the entire pile.

03The Cotton on the surface

The base is almost all cotton; what is not cotton is a recycled synthetic thread, put there to stop the structure stretching, and the difference is worth knowing before buying. Dense looping is what carries a rug of this kind through decades rather than years.

One thing to weigh first — a green field will argue with a patterned sofa, and it wants plain upholstery around it. Send it out to a washing specialist.
