Red Hereke-Pattern Hand-Knotted Viscose Rug

The pattern is Hereke and the weaving is Chinese, and it is worth saying so first: a hand-knotted viscose rug, 142 × 207 cm (4'8" × 6'9"), its red ground crowded with small blossoms and closed by a cream border whose corner figure repeats the whole way round. Hereke — a town on the Marmara coast, east of İstanbul — supplied the Ottoman palace, and the drawing that carries its name is defined by density: dozens of small flowers set in even rows, nearer to embroidery than to the big-medallion rugs of central Anatolia.

01After the color

Here they cover the red field end to end in cream and a dull gold. The red does not hold one value. Seen from the doorway it is close to wine; from the far corner it lifts toward coral, which is the viscose doing what viscose does with light. Something on the order of hundreds of thousands of knots was tied by hand for this, in China, on a viscose pile that is thin and smooth rather than deep — a rug you notice underfoot for its slipperiness, not its cushion.

02What it sits well with

That thinness makes it easy to lay under a door or a low sofa and easy to roll. It is also the reason for care: viscose is weak when wet and marks where it is rubbed, so nothing damp and nothing scrubbed goes near it. Hand-knotted in China, in the Hereke floral manner. 03At the loom in in Türkiye

Hereke names both a town in Türkiye and the dense floral drawing developed in its workshops. That drawing is now woven in several countries, this piece included, which was knotted by hand in China.

04What the yarn is

The pattern is Hereke; the origin is not. How should a viscose rug be cleaned? By a specialist, and kept dry between times. Viscose loses strength when wet and the fiber bruises where it is rubbed, so home spot-cleaning tends to leave a permanent pale patch.

05To make it last

Vacuum gently, keep liquids away from it, and send it out for a full wash. It belongs somewhere it can be seen whole — under a low table, or at the end of a room with nothing standing on its corners.
