On the surface: Wool. The same pattern woven in another yarn becomes another rug; the difference shows at the first touch.
Authentic pattern. The motif is built while the rug is woven; there is no layer printed on afterward. There is beige, cream in the ground.
This rug is woven in Turkmenistan. Where a rug is from is read in its knot and its yarn more than in its pattern; that is why the place on the spec sheet matters.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Once a week with a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile, is enough for everyday care.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Turkmen gül medallions on cream, in silk and viscose
Turkmenistan is where this was knotted, and the drawing on it is the one the Western trade sells under the name Bukhara: rows of octagonal gül medallions marching across a cream field. A hand-knotted rug in silk and viscose, 115 × 175 cm (3'9" × 5'9").
One of one, and it is not a wool rug. The gül is the Turkmen tribal medallion — an octagon quartered into blocks of color, drawn a little differently by each group and repeated in strict rows rather than arranged around a center.
Bukhara is the market city these weavings were traded through, which is how a Turkmen pattern acquired an Uzbek name in English. On a cream ground the effect is quieter than the usual deep-red version: the medallions read as structure rather than as ornament, and the field between them is where most of the light in the rug comes from. Silk and viscose, not wool, which is the fact to be clear about. A traditional Turkmen village weaving is wool on wool and feels dense and dry in the hand; this one is smooth and cool and takes light the way a satin does, and it will show a footmark where a wool rug would not.
That is the trade the fiber makes. At 115 × 175 cm it suits the foot of a bed, a study, or a wall — and a piece of this kind gets sent to a professional for washing rather than to a machine. What is a gül in a Turkmen rug? A gül is the octagonal medallion that gives Turkmen weaving its structure.
Each tribal group drew its own version, quartered inside into blocks of color, and the medallions are set in strict repeating rows across the field rather than arranged around a single center. Why is a Turkmen rug called a Bukhara? Bukhara is the Central Asian market city through which Turkmen weavings reached Western buyers, so the trade attached the city's name to the pattern.
The rugs themselves were made by Turkmen weavers, not in Bukhara. Hand-knotted in Turkmenistan, 115 × 175 cm (3'9" × 5'9"). Silk and viscose — there is no wool in it. Cream ground with rows of octagonal Turkmen gül medallions. Smooth and cool in the hand, with a sheen a wool rug does not have. It will hold a footmark; brushing the pile clears it. Professional washing. A single piece, and older Turkmen work in this drawing is getting harder to find. Hung on a wall it stops being a rug and becomes a record of how one tribe drew an octagon, which may be the better use for it.
A long look at the surface, the edge finish and the sizes.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
