The surface uses Wool. How a rug will feel is set first by the yarn, not by the pattern.
Traditional pattern. The motif is not printed on the surface; it is built as the rug is woven. The ground is red.
This rug is woven in Türkiye and carries the weaving tradition of that region. The place of production is stated openly on the spec sheet.
Cleaning method: Professional cleaning. Blot a spill with a dry cloth instead of rubbing it; rubbing spreads the stain and mats the pile.
The nature of handwork: Every woven rug is made one at a time, so sizes and color tones can vary by up to 3%. Small irregularities where the yarns cross are not faults; they are the signature of the weave.
Madder root in the wool, one Oushak medallion at the center
A medallion first, then the rug built outward from it. This is a hand-knotted wool Oushak in red, 177 × 238 cm (5'10" × 7'10"), made to commission in Türkiye and colored with kök boya — the root and plant dyeing of Anatolian weaving rather than a synthetic bath.
The yarn record lists wool and nothing besides. Only one exists. Oushak is the English name of a weaving town in western Anatolia, which has lent its name to a family of drawing since the sixteenth century: large forms, generous spacing, and a palette that leans on red and soft yellow.
The medallion version places one large figure at the center and answers it with quarter-figures in the corners, so the composition has an obvious middle and an obvious top. That is a different proposition from an all-over field, and it decides where furniture goes — a medallion rug wants to be seen whole, which usually means keeping the coffee table off its center or pulling the seating out to the edges. Plant dyeing is the reason the red is not one flat red.
Madder root, the classical source of Anatolian red, gives a color that varies from bath to bath and shifts with the mordant, so the ground moves between brick and rose across the length of the rug.
Anyone expecting the perfect evenness of a synthetic dye should look elsewhere; anyone who has stood on an old Anatolian rug knows that the variation is the point. This one was commissioned rather than taken from stock, which is what özel imalat means on the Turkish page.
Professional washing, and no domestic machine. Hand-knotted in Türkiye, made to commission rather than from stock. Wool, colored with kök boya — root and plant dyes. Medallion Oushak drawing: one central figure with quarter-figures in the corners. The red shifts between brick and rose along the rug, as plant-dyed grounds do. 177 × 238 cm (5'10" × 7'10"), about 4.2 square meters. Directional composition — it reads best seen whole, from one end. Professional washing.
A single piece. Medallion rugs were drawn for rooms where people sat around the edges and looked inward, and the ones that still work are still doing that.
The most common mistake in choosing a rug is buying too small. Here are the numbers, room by room:
At least the front legs of the sofas should sit on the rug. Leave 20–40 cm of floor showing around it.
Recommended: 200×290 · 240×340 · 300×380
It should extend 60–75 cm beyond every edge of the table, so chairs do not catch when pulled back.
Recommended: 200×290 · 250×250 · 240×340
Either cover the lower two-thirds of the bed, or choose a size that extends 60–90 cm on three sides.
Recommended: 170×240 · 200×290 · 240×340
Choose one 25–30 cm shorter than the hallway, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
Recommended: 80×290 · 90×390 · 90×490
Use a head without a beater bar, in the direction of the pile. Once a week is enough; dust is lifted before it settles between the yarns.
Blot, do not rub. Dampen with a suitable cleaner and dry.
Household machines are not suitable for woven rugs. One professional wash a year is recommended.
At least the front legs of your sofas should sit on the rug. For a standard living room 200 × 290 cm is recommended; for wide rooms 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 380 cm. The scale plan on this page shows how much of a 520 × 420 cm room each size covers.
